The West Midland’s largest industrial town is famed for its history in the leather making tradition. Hence within Walsall you’ll find a leather museum and Walsall football club are appropriately nicknamed “The Saddlers”. 

The history of the area is further told by the Roman Museum, Erasmus Darwin's House (father of Charles Darwin) and the Staffordshire Regiment Museum. Walsall was also the birthplace of Dr Samuel Johnson and English students can visit his house to study his library and works.

Further afield outdoor activities take place on Cannock Chase, especially water-based activities on Chasewater.

Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery

Wednesbury Museum is Sandwell's Museum and Art Gallery. It is a purpose built Victorian Art Gallery, housing collections which include fine art paintings, applied art, old toys as well as one of the world's largest collections of Ruskin pottery.

It is free to visit the Museum and Art Gallery in Wednesbury. We have a platform lift to the first floor.

Wall Roman Site

Wall was an important staging post on Watling Street, the Roman military road to North Wales. It provided overnight accommodation for travelling Roman officials and imperial messengers. The foundations of an inn and bathhouse can be seen, and many of the excavated finds are displayed in the on-site museum.

Museum Gardens is the formal part of the park. With its stunning floral displays and avenue of trees, along with the centrepiece fountain, statues of Captain Smith of the Titanic, King Edward VII, and Erasmus Darwin, it is a must-see on your visit.

Erasmus Darwin House

Erasmus Darwin House is a historic house and previous home of Dr Erasmus Darwin – scientist, doctor, inventor, poet, botanist and Grandfather of Evolution (as well as Charles Darwin!).

Chasewater Country Park

360 hectares of parkland to enjoy, with plenty to do, from a gentle stroll to wakeboarding! Rare habitats to discover and plenty of wildlife to spot. Also great for cycling and the site of the Chasewater Railway. Free to visit.

The Chase Sailing Club

The Chase Sailing Club enjoys 90 hectares of clean water set in the beautiful surroundings of Chasewater Country Park. The clubhouse that consists of secure changing rooms with showers. A large wet room with tables and chairs where food and drinks can be purchased at weekends.

Walsall Leather Museum

A fascinating working museum set in a restored leather factory, where you can watch live demonstrations of traditional leather craft and maybe have a go yourself!

Walsall Leather Museum will help you and the kids to discover why Walsall was known as the capital of leather goods in Britain.

It is free to visit, and is run by a team of friendly and knowledgeable volunteers.

The Chasewater Railway
