Welsh Mountain Zoo

The Zoo is set in 37 acres of woodland and beautiful gardens, overlooking the coastline and mountains of North Wales. We are home to camels, monkeys, lemurs, bears, tamarins, sea lions, tigers, chimpanzees, meerkats and much more!

The Zoo represents a unique living resource to stimulate pupils and students of all ages. The Zoo offers a first class education service.

Education Department

The Education Service is staffed by qualified educators who cater for all ages and abilities. The Education Programme is regularly updated to accomodate all ages and abilities from nursery to KS4 and college students to OAP’s.

Our popular National Curriculum linked Learning Sessions add an extra dimension to your visit. We are also happy to arrange Workshops on any subject to fit in with your needs.

We offer Zoo Trails and Education Packs which take the effort out of planning a visit. We also have a variety of Printed Resources for use in school or at the Zoo.

Education Centre Facilities

The schoolroom can seat a maximum of 30 and is full of interesting and educational displays, including crocodile skins, turtles and a lion’s foot.

The department has its own collection of animals which are used in the teaching sessions to bring the subjects alive!

The Welsh Mountain Zoo

The Welsh Mountain Zoo is a marvellous living resource. Nothing can replace the excitement and wonder of looking closely at a live animal.

Look at its size, its colour, its movement ……… Listen to it, smell it ……. ………. a living lesson!

The excitement and wonder of learning about animals through close contact cannot be replaced by video or television and is hard to reproduce in the classroom.

We hope we can inspire future generations to act in a positive way to help preserve wild animals in their natural habitat.

All of our resources have been designed to cover aspects of the National Curriculum, so a visit is really invaluable.

There’s lots to learn out in the Zoo too. Chimp Encounter: Our live presenter will introduce members of the chimpanzee family to zoo visitors. This zoonique presentation enables visitors to encounter chimpanzees and learn about their life in the wild through an audio visual presentation (at the chimpanzee enclosure).

Our Bird Show is designed to show the differences between bird species and the Sealion Feeding & Training sessions offer a chance to find out more about our fascinating sealions.

There is an opportunity to talk to the keepers involved and ask them questions. These sessions are well worth watching and can enhance follow-up work back at school / college.

Scientific Study

Zoos are successful in the housing of wild populations of animals. Animals in modern Zoos breed very successfully.

The study of animals in captivity helps us to know how they behave, and can help them in the wild. Studies of animals in the wild can help us to improve enclosures in Zoos.
