Elgin Museum
Elgin Museum
Elgin Museum is owned and managed by The Moray Society and is Scotland’s oldest independent museum. It is housed in a Grade A listed building, designed as a museum by local architect Thomas Mackenzie, and built in the Italianate style in the golden local sandstone. It opened in 1843.
Elgin Museum has a wide range of activities to suit primary and secondary aged children, linked with specific areas of the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. We actively encourage children of all ages to participate in museum led activities and outreach sessions. We have an education policy that enables our Education and Outreach worker, Di Hannan and other Museum staff and volunteers to deliver a flexible and adaptive service to suit the differing needs of schools and other groups.
Elgin Museum has a variety of object handling boxes that can be used both within the museum for school activity sessions and also for outreach session. These object handling boxes include:
- World War II
- Medieval Life
- Fossils
- Victorian Life
- Early Man
We are constantly updating our handling boxes and will be adding further topics in the future.
We welcome ideas and suggestions from schools, so if there is an area of the curriculum that you would like us to cover, please contact us and we can discuss your specific needs.
We also hold regular craft and activity drop-in sessions throughout the school holidays. Please browse our ‘news’ page to keep up to date on what is happening at the museum.
