Bradford Industrial Museum
Moorside Mills was built around 1875 as a small worsted spinning Mill by John Moore. Ownership of the mills changed many times, and they developed and grew. In 1970, Bradford Council bought Moorside Mills from Messrs. W & J Whitehead to create an innovative museum.
Bradford's Industrial Museum has permanent displays of textile machinery, steam power, engineering, printing machinery and motor vehicles, along with an exciting exhibitions programme. You can enjoy the splendour of Moorside House where the Mill Manager lived, or visit the Mill-workers' terraced houses dressed to reflect three different time periods.
Our learning team runs regular workshops schools and groups, along with special events and workshops accompanying the exhibitions programme.

We provide a range of educational opportunities and cultural experiences to support your 2014/15 curriculum needs. Our workshops, offered at a range of costs, cater for fully supported workshops, introductory sessions or self-service visits.

Toy Detectives

Using toys from the past 100 years pupils explore the working mechanisms and everyday materials of toys. This workshop encourages pupils to use historical terms, group toys according to similarity, difference and describe toys according to characteristics.

Art & Science of Noticing: Bradford Explorer

A workshop that encourages children to use the museums collections to make links between Bradford, the world around them and historical people and places. Pupils investigate collections and objects through hands on activities and are guided by their own curiosity to create personal responses.

Warp and Weft: A Material Journey

Follow the material journey from sheep to suit! Pupils will explore the different stages of woollen fabric production using hands on activities and through viewing working mill machinery, children will be introduced to this historically significant local industry.

Washday Memories

Explore how much washing has changed in the last 70 years. In a typical Bradford back to back house pupils will participate in a washday using wash boards, possers, dolly blue and the mangle.

A Local History Experience: A Victorian Classroom
Keystage: KS2
Curriculum links to History
As local mill working children, pupils will experience lessons at Moorside Board School including copywriting with dip pens, using slates and singing period songs. Pupils will also further explore life in Victorian Bradford and the significance of the mill industry and local educational reform.
