Key Stage 5 (17+)

Key Stage 5 (17+)

At Key Stage 5, pupils have a range of options available to them; A Levels, Baccalaureates (both English and International), BTECs and Scottish Higher National Certificates/Diplomas are just some of the qualifications open to the 17-18 age-group.

School trips can become even more tailored to suit interests at this level as student groups become smaller and more specialised. For example, one of the ultimate visits for sixth form scientists would be to the Cern Centre (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) near Geneva, where scientists are daily investigating the fundamental structure of the universe.

The Mount is a Norman earthwork motte and bailey fortress, which overlooks Corve Dale to the south-east. Standing at the north-east end of a low ridge, the oval flat-topped motte is crowned by a low bank around the southern half of its summit. Its ditch remains on the north and east sides but elsewhere it has been destroyed by the encroachment of farm buildings.

Corfham Castle is a mid 12th century motte and bailey fortress but sadly nothing now remains above the ground. In the inner bailey, the low motte has a wide surrounding ditch and the foundations of a shell keep. The large ditched outer bailey is lined with the foundations of a curtain wall and flanking towers.

One of the few inhabited castles in England

Broncroft Castle is a late 14th century stone fortified manor house, founded by Sir Roger Burley. In the Civil War, the castle was garrisoned by the Royalists until 1645 but it was ordered to be slighted in 1648. 'Much demolished' the Lutley family made repaired in the mid to late 17th century.

Charming and captivating. But look a little closer and you'll unearth the hidden heritage of the Clee Hills and the Corvedale. Coal mining on the Clee Hills started in medieval times while the Corvedale was alight with blast furnaces and iron foundries. Billowing black smoke would have filled the valley as chunks of the hills were carved out.

The Nordy Bank hill fort is located on a defensible spur of the Clee Hills at 343 metres above sea level overlooking Corve Dale and Wenlock Edge. The defensive ditch earthworks are in good condition although past quarrying has encroached near the site.

Designed by Scottish architect William Adam in 1732, Haddo House near Aberdeen is a magnificent example of an historic Scottish stately home.

School visits are available by prior arrangement and can be tailored to suit your requirements.
