In the first two years of compulsory education (Key Stage 1/5-7 years), pupils begin to explore their local environment. If the school is lucky enough to have a museum nearby, it will be an important starting point in their development. Further afield, there are activity-based museums such as the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden, the Science Museum and the Wellcome Foundation museums in London, or the various museums of childhood in Derbyshire, Edinburgh and the Victoria and Albert in Bethnal Green; all of which are popular venues for Key Stage 1 students.
Many providers cater for both day and short-term residential adventure activities, and both the National Trust and Forestry Commission run activities specifically tailored for the KS1 age-group.
Children are often interested in the theatre and music, and usually begin with trips to pantomimes and musicals in Key Stage 1. You can find guidance on ‘kids’ theatre in London here, and over in East Anglia there is the Norwich Puppet Theatre with Bristol Old Vic in the West Country; there’s bound to be a good venue near you!
Suitable Venues
Upton upon Severn is a lively little town that owes its existence to the River Severn. There are numerous pubs and hotels, many along the river, which provide a variety of fine ales and good food. In the 19th Century these used to serve the men who worked on the boats carrying goods to and from the port of Bristol.
Conderton Pottery is a small family run ceramics studio and gallery set in a gorgeous quintessentially English garden and orchard. The artisan pots are made for cooking and presenting food as well as gardening - reflecting the two passions of the ever entertaining potter Toff Milway. There are many lovely walks in the surrounding countryside.
Cascades Leisure Centre is a friendly sports centre and offers swimming, children’s activities, gym facilities and a health suite along with a varied programme of events

St. John’s Cathedral is almost certainly built on the site of a medieval hospital and parish church, founded in the 13th century in honour of the Trinity.
Some of this 13th century work is likely to be incorporated in the present west tower.

Built by William the Conqueror, Rockingham was a royal fortress for 450 years. Home to the Saunders Watson family. Set in a panoramic location with views over five counties, the Castle has magnificently furnished rooms of several periods, and is surrounded by 18 acres of superbly contrasting gardens including a beautiful Room Garden created by Chelsea Gold Medal Winner Robert Myers.

Tewkesbury Museum is a community museum protecting and displaying the heritage of the Town.
Tilbury Fort on the Thames estuary has protected London’s seaward approach from the 16th century through to the Second World War.
Henry VIII built the first fort here, and Queen Elizabeth I famously rallied her army nearby to face the threat of the Armada. The present fort is much the best example of its type in England, with its circuit of moats and bastioned outworks.
Since being opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1986, The Queen Elizabeth II Centre has been the venue for thousands of successful events, many of them high profile. We have gained a reputation as a premier event venue in central London, and currently host around 400 events each year.
Beautiful sandstone headland renowned for its eighth-century chapel and rock hewn graves; a wonderful urban green space
This sandstone headland, south of Morecambe and north of Heysham port, rises majestically above the sea. See the remains of St Patrick's Chapel, built in the early Medieval period and now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The eight body-shaped, rock-cut graves here are believed to be unique.
The Centre, opened in 1999, forms the focus for activities based on the 8th Century earthwork built by Offa, the King of Mercia. The dyke follows the Welsh English border from the hills above Prestatyn to the Severn Estuary near Chepstow.
